General Discussion / Re: Map balance
« on: February 12, 2022, 03:17:13 am »
I think the Korean map is more balanced because there's less spot abuse, but it's still not balanced. One of the biggest problems with FMP is that all your workers are stacked on top of each other, and Protoss can easily exploit this weakness with Templar drops. Temp drops are by far the most polarizing thing about the game we play. If you look at race statistics, everyone's record with P is the best, Zerg is the worst, and T is somewhere in the middle.

One solution I can think of would to have a second mineral patch in a different part of your base. You can use this to get a "mineral expo" without needing either map control or relying on your opponent to not scout for expos. I think Zerg would benefit the most from this, and it'd help balance the game. It would also reduce the power of spot abuse. The only downside is that more stacked minerals means the map would max out faster, but even just like 20 stacked minerals per base would be an improvement. I'm not sure the exact location this should be in, and I can't even really think of a remotely good spot for the 12 and 6 o'clock bases. But I'm just throwing the idea out there to see what people think.

My take is probably atypical, but as someone who missed the entirety of UGL, not having played since before VGT died, here's my fill:

There are two dominant fast map types: traditional and styler/super. Super is the Korean version of our map and it's pretty nice. Lots of good public players play on this map on West server, sometimes even more than on the traditional map.

I think obviously there is less activity, and a lot of the best players from years ago have stopped playing. We have had more Korean players and low$ players coming and dominating the league. Right now, 3 out of the top 5 are either Korean or traditionally low$ players.

I think the overall skill level has risen, but I think that the number of starlike gosus has gone down by a significant amount. The game is still interesting despite this because there are also fewer noobs. More people sort of gravitate to what is probably considered 'above average' from years ago.

There are a lot of good streams, particularly on Super map, that you can find on Twitch and YouTube which are opening up way higher levels of play than we're used to in this community. Lately it's been cool to watch various foreigners try to beat the Koreans, particularly: Xtre-Mamba, Gangster]Jose, Sithlord]lk[, Pro]Defjam.

Also the best clan since I've been back, by far, has been Pro. They have four of the most dominant (albeit inative) players on this game: monte, fantastic, evil, and defjam.

I always knew the koreans would destroy us lol. Its cool that theyre playing fastest more now. And their map style is pretty cool, definitely some advantages to it

That's weird, I just mentioned your name a couple days ago. Now you're back.. Lol are you the real one? I hope so, it would be nice to see you and Newbport play some 2s in this league.

Yo is this website like the new SCD/UGL? Is there a vanilla league or is everything completely BW now?

I haven't played in at least 2 years. My akas were: O.o]Alakazam-,  GhOsT-HyDRa, GhOsT-NuKe, FuN]kyMoNKey, Av]Dragoon, and honestly i forget what else lol.

Does someone wanna fill me in on the current state of fastest? And who are the best players that still play? When I stopped playing i think cole was the most dominant player by a long shot. Has the overall skill level declined since then?
